Casio pop

Music

Sigridur Nielsdottir Nordic countries seem to love their casio. Sigriður Nielsdottir, first, is an elderly lady who arrived in Iceland in 1949 to work as a housemaid and who never left. As soon as her daughters had grown up, she began recording music in her kitchen, playing the Casio and singing. She’s released more than 40 albums of casio pop, both childish and sometimes weird, on the icelandic label Bad Taste, where you can listen to some of her songs. Although her CDs are being sold as far away as Japan, and Slowblow invited her to contribute two songs to the Nói Albínói soundtrack, Sigríður has never given a concert, and never will. A couple of years ago, her songs were being performed live by members of Múm, Slowblow and Kitchen Motors at a concert at the Reykjavik Opera…

Back to Sweden, Steso Songs is much younger: Korro is a 21-year old girl who plays casio pop as well. Those of you who remember and like Lispector’s tiny melodies will probably be hooked by Steso’s tunes and cute voice, by her casio keyboards and her timid use of electronics and computers… No album yet, no contract signed with a label, just a couple of mp3s to download for your own pleasure. Casio pop is not dead!
