Manna – Food In A New Light

2006.09.28

Music

MannaHow many insects does it take to make a hamburger? How do you fit hundreds of litres of water into one bottle of beer? What do researchers really say about the environmental benefits of organic farming? Can we eat our way to sustainable development? All of this – and much more – is taken up in Manna, a different exhibition about food, the environment and our hidden dependence on nature.

The exhibiton will take place in Stockholm this fall at the popular market garden and café Rosendals Trädgård (“The Rosendal Garden”) of the city park “The Royal Djurgården”.

Small Houses In Finland

2006.09.27

Music

Small Houses In FinlandLast month, I jumped on the new IKEA catalog and spent hours enjoying the new designs. I don’t like everything, but most of the design is just great, especially when you have the contectual how and why of it. Something I love too is the space they set their furnitures.

If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy this book. It’s about small houses. In Finland. Collected by Finnish architect Esa Pilonen, the spaces presented here are neat and actually not that small. A good reference book about this particular Nordic touch in architecture and interior design. OK, it does look much better than the IKEA catalog, that’s why it’s a little bit more expensive. Hard cover, 128 pages, available at Rakennustieto and Amazon.

70’s Finnish goodness!

Armi (Armi Anja Orvokki Aavikko), the singer, died 4 years ago. She was Miss Finland 1977.

Danny (Ilkka Lipsanen) is still going on! He has achieved a pretty long carrier as singer and guitarist since the 60’s.

Jenny Wilson

2006.09.25

Music

Jenny WilsonNot really my cup of tea, but I’m sure some of you will enjoy. Jenny Wilson is a Swedish electro-pop artist, some say influenced by Kate Bush as well as Miss Elliott. Interesting enough for a plug here.

Before working on her solo debut album, Jenny has been the singer of First Floor Power.

Hurra Torpedo: Symphony For Appliances

2006.09.22

Music

Hurra TorpedoYou are going to experience something I would describe being typically Scandinavian. Check out (not super safe at work, nothing obscene – it’s rather a turn-off – but you could get some suspicious looks from your coworkers…):

There… When I say typically Scandinavian, it’s about this kind of humor where you’re not sure if it’s really humor, derision, sarcasm or if they are serious. I love it.

Those guys are Hurra Torpedo, the world’s leading kitchen appliance rock group, est. 1993. They play not only covers, but also some original songs.

With appliances, the band has another specialty: yearly split and reunion tours. The members also play in several bands, under a artistic collective project called Duplex Records.

Not sure if you will jump on it, but their last album is Kollossus Of Makedonia. I think you ought to see them live. They have even recently played in the US, including the SXSW festival.
