Manna - Food In A New Light

Mika

2006.09.28

(Sweden, Food)

MannaHow many insects does it take to make a hamburger? How do you fit hundreds of litres of water into one bottle of beer? What do researchers really say about the environmental benefits of organic farming? Can we eat our way to sustainable development? All of this – and much more – is taken up in Manna, a different exhibition about food, the environment and our hidden dependence on nature.

The exhibiton will take place in Stockholm this fall at the popular market garden and café Rosendals Trädgård (”The Rosendal Garden”) of the city park “The Royal Djurgården”.

Jenny WilsonNot really my cup of tea, but I’m sure some of you will enjoy. Jenny Wilson is a Swedish electro-pop artist, some say influenced by Kate Bush as well as Miss Elliott. Interesting enough for a plug here.

Before working on her solo debut album, Jenny has been the singer of First Floor Power.

El Perro del Mar

Mika

2006.06.15

(Music, Sweden)

El Perro del Mar I had downloaded the four tracks available on El Perro del Mar’s website. I had read about her music and about this Sarah Assbring who “sounds so completely bummed out, so miserable in her own skin that even handclaps and tambourines sound like harbingers of doom” (Pitchforkmedia). And I had decided that it was not exactly the kind of music I was looking for at the moment. But it’s not until a friend of mine offered a compilation CD with one of her songs on it that i started listening carefully… and that i realised how beautiful this sadness can be.

Based in Göteborg (again), the sole member of El Perro Del Mar, Sarah, started as an mp3/cdr-artist and released her first songs through the Swedish label Hybris (home of Vapnet, Mont Mardié and many other Swedish acts). After her debut EP released in November 2004, El Perro Del Mar worked with Jens Lekman and together they released a split vinyl single on which Sarah contributed with the song ‘Shake it off’. The single was available in Sweden and in the United States via Jens’ label Secretly Canadian - it was quickly sold out. El Perro Del Mar also went on a short tour in Sweden accompanying Jens around this time. In Spring 2005, a compilation album of all the earlier released tracks, ‘Look it’s El Perro Del Mar’, was released in Sweden. The following summer El Perro Del Mar did quite a few live performances around Sweden for an artist who doesn’t particurlarly enjoy performing live. In December 2005 she put together a pretty special Christmas concert together with the remarkable Jenny Wilson, a 4-piece band and a huge choir. The concert took place at Södra Teatern in Stockholm. On the 10th of April the self entitled album was released in the UK and Europe on the British label Memphis Industries.

So please, don’t be silly, don’t wait as long as i did, and simply enjoy…

Maia Hirasawa in Copenhagen

Mika

2006.05.22

(Music, Sweden)

Maia HirasawaAfter several posts written by my Noisedfisk colleagues about some kind of music I’m not really into (finnish heavy metal? swedish post-rock? come on, guys!!!), I thought I had to write something about pop… i mean p!o!p!. I just posted something about Whitest Boy Alive, but I’m delighted to report about the concert Maia Hirasawa played in Copenhagen last saturday. ‘Cause I just spent a wonderful week-end in the wonderful Danish capital and it gave me the opportunity to see the wonderful Maia Hirasawa live. The regular readers of Noisedfisk might remember that Maia is the Swedish girl who recently won the Sami contest; that she can be seen on stage with her friend Annika from Hello Saferide; that she’s cute, funny and -even more important- talented…

She played live last Saturday at Café Blågårds Apotek, in front of a bunch of indie kids and other Danes who were apparently more interested in their pints of öl than in the music she played. Too bad: they should have listened more carefully, ’cause Maia and her friend Josefine Lindstrand played three sets from 9 to 11.30 and created a fantastic atmosphere. Maia is able to sing the sweetest slow tunes with a delicate voice and her acoustic guitar, but also to play some of her best melodies with energy, a good dose of fun, a piano and toys such as a plastic xylophone.

You can listen to (and obviously download) four songs on her myspace, but you’d better buy her new debut EP, titled My New Friend. And if ever you have the opportunity, go and see her play with Hello Saferide (Sweden, Denmark and… France again in the next few weeks) or with a jazztrio: they’re gonna have concerts in churches all around Sweden in July…
